the vp of design role

In a startup environment, the VP of UX & Design wears multiple hats and is expected to be hands-on when necessary. The VP of UX & Design balances creativity with practicality and effectively communicates the importance of user experience to the broader organization. Their role is essential in creating products and services that meet customer needs and differentiate the company in the market. As a design leader, I ensure that products are easy to navigate and deliver simple workflows for people to complete their work quickly. Practically speaking, this means building and managing a design team from the ground up while also doing the work of a very senior individual contributor (aka “the player-coach”). As the company and team scale, the balance between managing and designing shifts in favour of managing as new members join and take on specialized roles. Eventually, the focus will be less on daily design production and more on design strategy, team management, and design operations.

I’ve done my job well when the sales cycle is smooth and end users report that the product is easy to use and they extract its promised value.

Part of my role is to simplifY complexity

clarify and simplify

Early-stage startups tackle complex problems. For a product to be successful, the market must be clear on what it does and what value it delivers.

That clarity starts with how leadership speaks about the company and the product in their internal discussions. When conversations at this level are complex and unclear, employees will reflect this uncertainty in how they design and build the product. That confusion can seep into company messaging, confusing the market, which may delay the establishment of a product-market fit.

Part of my role on a leadership team is to help articulate a product's capabilities and differentiate that from how the technology works. People care about what they can accomplish with the tool, not how it works under the hood.
